Reforestation

During the last 60 years, logging and development has changed the composition
of Mattole forests, particularly along Mattole creeks. A lack of Douglas-fir trees
in the riparian zone has led to higher summertime stream temperatures, lower bank
stability, and reduced the numbers of large trees that may fall into streams to
create salmon habitat. The
Reforestation Program replants forests that were not renewed after logging, and
plants trees to stabilize slopes after restoration work and increase shade and
large woody debris recruitment for Mattole creeks. The
MRC Reforestation Program emphasizes using species indigenous to the planting
area and only uses
local seed collected from the appropriate elevations. NATIVE
PLANT NURSERY The MRC operates a Native Plant Nursery in
Petrolia, as well as an "in-situ" native grass seed nursery on Propser
Ridge. The Petrolia native plant nursery grows a variety of native grasses, as
well as native brush and hardwood species. These native plants are currently grown
with the goal of serving contracted restoration projects; we are interested in
hearing from the community about what species you would like to see grown. Contact
Native Plant Nursery Manager Bird
Jowaisas to share your ideas, or for more information. MONITORING
The Council
conducts survival surveys and photodocumentation on all its projects to determine
success of the work. After the first summer, planting sites are visited to evaluate
the condition of the trees, and determine what could improve success. Sometimes
browse protectors are prescribed to prevent deer from nibbling the young tips.
If additional shade is needed, mulching with bark, branches, or rock can be added.
Monitoring can also lend insight on planting technique, seedling stock, and micro-site
selection. SERVICES The
MRC provides tree planting services to landowners at a cost of labor plus materials.
Call for the specific orders. Tree
planting services are provided at no cost to landowners who are participating
in a specific restoration project that has a tree planting component. If you are
interested in learning more about reforestation, or think you may be interested
in a reforestation project on your land, please call the Council at 629-3514.
