The Shrinking Grasslands of the Mattole
The past half-century has been one of dramatic change for the landscape of the Mattole watershed. Alongside more obvious changes such as the logging of more than 90 percent of the old-growth timber and the subdivision of several major ranches, another process — quieter and more gradual, but nonetheless significant — has been underway.
