Meet the Lower Mattole Fire Safe Council

May 31, 2002

Here's what a few members of the new Fire Safe Council had to say about fire in their neighborhoods. If you have concerns about your own neighborhood, give your representative a call! The Fire Safe Council will also include representatives from the Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, California State Parks, Honeydew Volunteer Fire Company, and Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department.

Chantele Leatherwood (Windy Nip/Doreen Rd.) 839-4999 I look
forward to meeting others in our area and learning their priorities and
concerns about fire, helping them establish emergency routes.

Ian Sigman (Honeydew) 629-3445 I’m most interested in looking at how our landscape was historically shaped by fire, how we relate to fire, and how fire is important to the health of ecosystems. Humans used to have a close relationship with fire, but we have lost that connection. I’m interested in restoring that relationship.

Josh Free (Prosper Ridge) 629-3580 Communication and developing an evacuation plan is most important. Paperwork is in process to form a non-profit fire and rescue company for Prosper Ridge.

Randy Speck (Panther Gap) 599- 7197 I would like to see homes in the hills having defensible space for better firefighting success, in addition to making sure roads are cleared of brush to ensure access for emergency vehicles and evacuations. It would be great if we could get outside funding to create shaded fuel breaks.

Chompers Cook (Lighthouse Rd.)629-3428 "My biggest fire concern on Lighthouse Road is Evergreen Way. There's a lot of elderly folks who need help clearing and thinning. Also, I'd like to see more water storage tanks, and to use the roads as shaded fuel breaks."

Jim Danisch (Green Fir) 629-3335 "This pot will go through the fire at 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt steel. A forest fire can reach the same temperature. I look forward to working with my neighbors to help reduce fire risk."

Also on the Fire Safe Council:

Ron Jordan (Petrolia) 629-3322

Jim Klump (Conklin Creek) 629-3600

Francis Sweet (Lower North Fork) 629-3600
