Middle Mattole Good Roads, Clear Creeks update

May 10, 2001

Mattole Restoration Council and Jack Monschke Watershed Management will be working to inventory sediment delivery sites this year and next in five tributary watersheds in the middle Mattole area. Over fifty participating landowners are involved with the project, spread out over twenty square miles of land – our largest Good Roads, Clear Creeks project to date.

Active and abandoned roads will be inventoried for potential erosion, and treatments will be prescribed for problem areas, with an eye for reducing sediment delivery caused by erosion problems. Reducing the amount of sediment entering the five creeks (Middle, Westlund, Gilham, Sholes and Four-Mile) will improve salmon habitat in the creeks and downstream in the Mattole River. The Mattole Salmon Group will collect instream habitat baseline data before and after treatments are made. In this way, we can connect the restoration of hillslopes with improvements in stream and river habitat.

If you are a resident or landowner in the mid-Mattole area, and would like information, call landowner liaisons Gabrielle Roach (223-0044, for Middle, Westlund and Gilham Creeks) or J.J. Hall (223-1649 for Sholes and Four-Mile Creeks).
