Taking preventative measures to equip yourself for a spill:

Taking preventative measures to equip yourself for a spill:MRC researched various kits that could be used to contain a spill. You can now purchase absorbent materials for spills that do not absorb water. In light of astronomical cleanup costs, this may be one of the wisest investments you will ever make:
For Fire Departments and Businesses: CDF uses a kit that is suitable for spills up to 130 gallons. When bought in bulk, this kit costs about $120 and includes: oil absorbent pads, socks (booms), disposal bags, a storage drum, and gloves. These supplies can be purchased through the companies listed below. A donation for materials to your local fire department could really help these volunteers become better equipped for spills.
For Individuals: As mentioned elsewhere, a spill on your land invites scrutiny and expensive cleanup efforts. We recommend a back-of-the-truckseat vinyl suitcase kit that Renner Petroleum (443-1645) sells for $60 that includes: oil absorbent pads, safety gloves, goggles, boom, wooden plugs, and pipe putty. Recently, Renner has either mailed or hand-delivered information regarding safety, regulations, and maintenance of above-ground fuel tanks. Awareness is the beginning of responsibility.
If you regularly deal with diesel products, be prepared. Accidents do happen, and we all live downstream.
Companies that supply these materials are:
• PIG Corp. (800) HOT-DOGS or www.newpig.com
(lots of different sized kits and absorbent materials)
• Grainger Industrial Supply (707) 584-9211
(supplies drums for containment)
• Redding Service Station Equipment (530) 241-1275
(Ask for Larry, supplies CDF with absorbent materials)
