MRC begins planting hardwoods
by Keith Leatherwood November 20, 2002
For the past twenty years, the MRC rReforestation pProgram has planted Nnative Douglas- fir in previously logged areas previously logged, slides, road removal projectss, blowdowns, and washouts. Mattole residents have planted hundreds of thousands of seedlings, many of whom have now matured. (residents as well as trees).
Keeping an eye upslope, we will be shifting our focus into the riparian zone. Insert description of seed collecting training and field trip to nursery!! Future projects include hardwood planting of native riparian species such as; big leaf maple, buckeye, Bbay Llaurel, dogwood, and Oregon ashetc…, in an attempt to restore diversity and provide longer-lived species in creek areas.
With seed collecting already begun, opportunities will soon beare available for Mattole residents interested in growing these and other species. If you are interested in growing at least a minimum one hundred trees, MRC will assist with equipment, seed stock, and education. Viable trees may then be purchased for restoration projects. Thousands of trees are needed in the next few years.
