Hillie's Book Review
by Hillie November 20, 2002
You may not know that the MRC Resource Center contains a small but varied library. There are reference books and good reads, videos and audio-tapes on topics from restoration and ecology to ranching and forestry. I chose a book, Green Collar Jobs-Working in the New Northwest, by Alan Thein Durning. He is the founder and executive director of Northwest Environment Watch. His book is well-researched and references abound. But it is also a good read, holding my interest and challenging my beliefs.
Durning considers the Northwest to be northern California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, southeast Alaska, Idaho, and western Montana. He zeroes in on five communities who are all struggling with the transition from resource extraction (lumber, mining, and fishing), to "greener" industries (information technology, tourism, recreation). He finds mostly good news, but some surprises, much more to be learned, and a lot of community activism. Some efforts echo those learned in the Mattole. But there are as many solutions arising as there are challenges, and I found this an exciting and informative book to read. Green Collar Jobs is only one of many interesting reads in the Resource Center library. Come on down, and see if there might be something of interest to you!
