TMDL Final Draft Released
by Amanda Malachesky November 20, 2002
In October, 2002, the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) released the Draft Technical Report for the Mattole Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). The MRC hosted two informational public meetings on the TMDL this past spring for Mattole residents to find out about the TMDL process and how it might affect them. Both meetings were well attended, and gave local landowners an opportunity to ask questions and make comments to the SWRCB staff.
The Mattole River is included on the federal 303(d) list of impaired water bodies, a part of the Clean Water Act of 1972, and is included because of its high temperatures and amount of sediment. The Draft Technical Report describes what the Water Board staff found with their research about the state of the river in regards to temperature and sediment, and includes recommendations about how to address these federally-mandated concerns. The SWRCB will continue to accept comments on the Draft until ??/??/?? at which time it will publish its final draft.
The MRC will continue to bring landowners information about the TMDL process as it becomes available. If you would like to receive a copy of the plan for comment, or would like to be on a Mattole TMDL mailing list, please contact David Leland at the SWRCB, address, phone number, email. The MRC also has a copy in the Petrolia office which may be reviewed in house. To arrange a time to review the document, please call Amanda Malachesky, Resource Center Coordinator at 629-3514, or email her at amanda@mattole.org.
