Mattole students come together for Watershed Week
December 15, 2001
This fall, the Mattole Ecological Education Program organized and hosted the Third Annual Watershed Week. This watershed-wide event offers teachers in the all Mattole schools an opportunity to use the watershed theme in their regular studies.
Some of the highlights of the Third Annual Watershed Week included a visit to the Mattole Salmon Group fish rearing facility with the K-3 students of Mattole Elementary, and a bird of prey specialist who came and flew a hawk over the heads of students in lower valley schools.
On the last day of Watershed Week, a festival is thrown at which all Mattole students
gather to celebrate their home. This was Whitethorn School’s first year attending the festival and we hope to have them back next year! While the Mattole is a fairly small watershed, its topography can isolate us from our own neighbors. The Watershed Week festival gives students a chance to meet and attend fun classes with all the other students in the watershed. A special thanks to the teachers and parents who helped out with this year’s events. Thanks also to Josie Brown for bringing the falconer to the school. If you would like to contribute next year, either by offering a class to students or by lending a hand with the preparations, contact Drew Barber at the Council office.
