MRC Membership Guide

December 15, 2001

Your membership in the Mattole Restoration Council is our most valuable asset. Without support from local residents and landowners, the Council would not be able to help landowners and residents envision and create sustainable lives in the Mattole watershed.

Membership is about more than just dollars for the cause or numbers of members represented – your direct involvement can further the goals of watershed restoration and sustainable living in the Mattole:

Write an article for the MRC newsletter: Have you done something on your lands to increase the watershed’s economic or ecological health and productivity? Do you know someone who is? We are looking for writers who want to put a human face on Mattole-based efforts. A story can be written over several months and can be anywhere from 100 to 2000 words. We are also looking for photos and line drawings (related to articles, or for general clip-art).

Fundraising and office volunteering: Offer assistance with MRC office tasks – entering data, inventorying our library resources, or create a special project to further watershed restoration goals. Office volunteering can be on a regular or one-time basis. We are also looking for a volunteer to coordinate an “in-town” fundraising event such as a dinner/auction.

Host a Douglas-fir reforestation project: MRC plants native Mattole Douglas-fir trees (from one hundred to one hundred thousand) on private lands that have been logged and not replanted (we don’t plant in areas that have historically been grasslands). Call for more details.

Purchase a map of your lands in the Mattole: MRC can create a customized map of your lands in the Mattole for as little as $20-30. This is an easy way to support our GIS mapping efforts.

Participate in next years annual meeting as a volunteer: We need help soliciting donations for the raffle, hosting the event, or helping with food preparation. Call Vikki at the MRC for more info.

Help identify restoration projects for MRC: One of the most important ways that you can help out as a member is to identify areas for possible restoration, reforestation or road improvement projects. MRC can find funding for projects within the Mattole watershed that will improve watershed health. Through our Good Roads, Clear Creeks Program, MRC works with multiple landowners within a neighborhood to inventory and treat road-related erosion problems at no cost to the landowners. Please let us know if you’d like to coordinate a project with your neighbors (some compensation may be possible).

Volunteer during Watershed Week and with MRC’s Ecological Education Program: Watershed Week is a celebration of the Mattole watershed and its inhabitants held in October at Triple Junction High School. Volunteers can help with setup/cleanup, teaching a mini-course, or working with students in the classroom on a regular basis.

Write comment letters on Timber Harvest Plans: Contact Ali at the MRC office to receive information and regular updates on Timber Harvest Plans within the Mattole. Comment letters from local residents can have an impact on how plans are executed. We are also looking for volunteers for letter writing tables (in town) to encourage the acquisition of the Rainbow Ridge forest.
