MRC Helps EIC to Design Classrooms for Real Environmental Projects

May 31, 2002

This summer from August 12-15th the MRC will be offering a first time institute for all Mattole teachers. The institute is in an educational framework called EIC, or Using the Environment as an Integrating Context for Learning. EIC defines a frame-work for education which utilizes interdisciplinary, collaborative, student-centered, hands on, and engaged learning.

In other words, it helps teachers design their classes to use real projects (social and or environmental) as the foundation of what and how students learn. This method has been demonstrated to greatly improve several aspects of schools, including student enthusiasm and learning. This framework has received great support from Mattole school boards and administrators. We are seeing this as a way to help Mattole schools develop unique and valued methods for teaching and learning. If you are interested in finding out more about EIC call Drew at the resource center.
