Erroneous record flows in Petrolia

Our August 4th posting (below) regarding record flows reported at the Petrolia gauge turned out to be incorrect.  On August 10th, USGS retroactively adjusted flow data, changing the August 3rd reading to 100 cubic feet per second (CFS), well below the previous record of 130 CFS recorded in 2005.

Please stop by our Petrolia Resource Center for books, DVDs, and how-to manuals to help conserve more water in your home.

And for once in the summertime, we aren't talking about low flows. As of Tuesday morning, 131 cubic feet per second (CFS) of water was flowing past the Mattole River gage by the Petrolia bridge - the previous highest discharge on this day in the 61 years of measurement was 130 cfs in 2005.

You can look at the numbers by clicking on the streamflow links on our Mattole weather page.

You might want to celebrate this historic occasion by staying well-hydrated while increasing your garden's soil organic matter content or preparing more water storage for the dry season next year, or whenever it comes again.
