Projects 2003
The Lower Mattole Fire Safe Council currently has four projects
happening in conjunction with the Mattole Restoration Council.
These projects are pilot fuel reduction projects and are intended
to reduce the risk to human life and property due to wildfire.
For more information on fuel reduction projects, contact Amanda
Freeman at the Mattole Restoration Council's Petrolia
office.

This project removed invasive and exotic species that pose
fire risk to the Mattole Elementary School and the Mattole
Valley Community Center. Eleven acres were treated by thinning
and removal of scotch broom, blackberry, and eucalyptus.
FUEL REDUCTION FOR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY: Panther
Gap
This project created a shaded fuel break along 7.5 miles
of Panther Gap Road, which is adjacent to Humboldt Redwoods
State Park. This work will offer a line of defense against
wildfires in the Panther Gap neighborhood from the State Park.
Two fuel reduction work parties were held to educate residents
about specific techniques.
FUEL REDUCTION FOR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY: Wilder
Ridge
This project created 4 miles of shaded fuel break along Wilder
Ridge Road between Honeydew and Ettersburg. Eventually, future
fuel break projects on Wilder Ridge will connect with shaded
fuel breaks on Telegraph Ridge to the south, offering a contiguous
line of defense from fires in the King Range National Conservation
Area to the west. This project is visible from Wilder Ridge
Road, approximately 6-8 miles south of Honeydew.
